Knowing Jesus

Jesus is alive and that changes everything.

The same Jesus who lived 2,000 years ago and who was killed on a Roman cross, was raised from the dead and is alive today.

Entering into a personal relationship with this living Jesus is uncomplicated enough. The hard part is getting to the place of being done with your self.

What does it mean to be “done with your self”?
Some might call it “reaching the end of your rope” or coming to the place where you see yourself, warts and all, for who you really are and realize it is not enough and never can be if limited to human resources alone. Jesus preached that we ought to “repent” (or “do a 180) and believe the good news of the Kingdom of God. “Surrender” is another way of describing the experience, since it’s the willful giving up on running your own life… but giving it up to Jesus so that He can live your life.

The story of Jesus can be found in the Bible, especially four of the books in the Bible; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. If you don’t have a Bible of your own, you can go to BibleGateway.com and enter “Book of John” in the search field. You can read through it in a couple of hours.

What does it mean to “trust in Jesus”?
Once you are convinced of your own untrustworthiness for running your life and also convinced of Jesus’ trustworthiness and capacity to run your life and make you new, then surrender comes easy. Everything hinges on Jesus.

The relationship part usually begins with Jesus Himself tugging on your innermost being and opening your ‘spiritual eyes’ to see that, as the Bible discloses, He was and is God in the flesh, and that He is utterly good, utterly powerful and utterly trustworthy. In seeing this truth, it is quite normal to also see yourself as not utterly good and not utterly powerful, and not utterly trustworthy.

This ‘sight’ is normally accompanied by the mental conclusion that Jesus’ death on the cross accomplished something profound for you personally. (On the cross Jesus covered for all your failures and opened a way for you to know God.) At this point, most of us make the decision to demote ourselves – or fire our self from being the boss and ask Jesus to take charge. That is, if you are able to trust Jesus; that He can and will intervene and make you suitable for entering the Kingdom of God.

If you would like to begin a new relationship with God, a personal one, agree with him now about the terribleness of the distance between you and him and renounce the ownership of your life. Allow him to take ownership. Gve it over to Him.

If you are ready to do that, simply talk to God now. Tell him your intentions and your desire. He knows your heart so the words don't matter all that much. What matters is that you do business with your God honestly.

This is the beginning of new life. To grow, you need to be with Jesus and His followers a lot. You need to learn His heart and mind. Reading the Bible and praying will help. Telling others the good news of the Kingdom of God also helps you to be closely identified with Jesus.
