Terryville Fair Outreach: August 25-27

Brothers and Sisters,

This month, we'll be doing our annual Terryville Fair outreach. We've had a table at the Terryville Fair for several years in a row, now, and we've always found it to be a great way to connect with people in our community.

Not only do we get to know some of our neighbors better, at the Fair,  but we often have the opportunity to pray with them and share the love of Jesus with them. This event is one of our major outreach focuses of each year, and I believe it to be one of our most fruitful outreach events.

We are in need of volunteers to help with the event. If you'd like to volunteer, please reach out to Dorathy Smolkis at DorothySmolkis@churcharmyusa.org

Please click here if you or your group are interested in going through any of these trainings!

  • Foundations of Evangelism and Outreach

    • An 8 hour training focused on engaging those who are interested in doing ministry as a part of daily life. Anyone who wants to be equipped for ministry in their own sphere is welcome. The training features sections such as "Listening, " "Community," "Drugs and Alcohol," "Violence & Aggression," and a live action Bible Study.

  • Bridges out of Poverty

    • An 3-8 hour training using the lens of the economic class to provide employers, community organizations, social agencies and individuals the concrete tools and specific strategies to prevent, reduce and alleviate poverty.

  • Learning to Listen for Change

    • Cultural sensitivity from a Biblical framework

  • The Fivefold Ministry

    • This is a teaching on the 5 main types of ministry roles. It focuses on Ephesians 4:11-16 as a framework for equipping the saints within the Body of Christ.

  • Understanding Tools of Evangelism

    •  Understanding how we are uniquely wired to do evangelism based on our personality.

“The Church Army USA Foundations class is a fun and accessible way of engaging the task of mission with Jesus. Through the times of reflection as well as the content shared participants have the opportunity to make concrete their own participation in the good and life-giving work of bearing witness. I commend the course as an opportunity to taste and see the goodness of Jesus in fresh ways and to gain an imagination for one’s own place in God’s ongoing mission of proclamation.”

Course testimonials:

"Spending a Saturday in the Church Army USA Foundations class was time well spent for this Christ-follower trying to understand the gospel more deeply. I grew up with an understanding of the gospel that was primarily spiritual and focused on the moment of faith and subsequent sanctification. This course opened my eyes to the "front end" of the gospel, where friendship, relationships in community, and hospitality meet the brokenness of the world. There was vision casting and practical help in living out hospitality, listening well, the causes and impact of violence, and the steps of recovery that are also the steps of the gospel."

When I signed up for Foundations for Evangelism & Outreach, my expectation was to leave the training with some new "techniques" for evangelism to replace the outdated ones I'd learned in the 80's and 90's. I also hoped I might pick up some tips on how to feel less awkward in my feeble attempts at interacting with our homeless neighbors.

What I discovered instead was a much more substantive and, well, foundational approach to offering hospitality and building community within cultures abounding in conflict, violence and addiction.

The experiential Bible study exercise at the conclusion of the training was powerful, meaningful, and something I don't think I'll ever forget.

I now have a much better understanding that trust has to first be earned in order for the gospel to be most effectively shared, and I look so forward to participating in the next level of Foundations for Evangelism and Outreach.

Thanks!

It was a great intro into the ethos and work of Church Army USA! We really appreciated the format that fostered group input. Most importantly, we were moved by the visualization piece in the beginning and end of class: starting with moving through the senses of “thy kingdom come” and ending with a bible reenactment. It was a reminder of Christ’s presence in and care for the things and people that our culture does not celebrate or support. Very much looking forward to building on the foundations of what we learned!!

“The Foundations class is a great look at the history of Church Army, and Herb and Angel's involvement in the organization. I found it very interesting, especially Herb's anecdotes describing what inner-city ministry often looks like, and the skills necessary to work in such a mission field. Herb and Angel did a great job of sharing parts of their training, and their calling is evident. I also enjoyed the deep dive into Mark 5, and Herb's excellent teaching through this passage. He did such a great job of tying together the scriptures at the center of Ch 5, the resurrection of Jarius' daughter and healing the woman with the issue of blood. The entire day was immersed in good teaching, good fellowship. Herb and Angel are so compelling, if you haven't yet gotten to know them, come for that reason alone.”

“Class was good, wish I had taken more notes. Had I, I would have a number of other descriptions. You're encouraged to go deeper than the everyday response of, "I'm good" Fed with insight on the inner working of tough situations. Challenged to test your own responses. Taken back in time, to view thru other eyes. And left encouraged not to stop with just an indifferent " I'm good"

“I would highly recommend the foundations class! I appreciated that the class was both grounded in Scripture and provided real, tangible strategies for walking alongside others. We discussed both high level theological ideas and then on the ground methods we can use to better live out our faith. I walked away challenged and excited to find more ways to make the implicitness of my faith more explicit to those around me. A very worthwhile way to spend a Saturday!”

Having attended a previous discipleship course where the focus was on learning the Bible sufficiently enough in order to teach it, I was pleasantly surprised at the refreshing way in which the Foundations for Evangelism & Outreach Course focused on the basics of fostering open communication and understanding with others. While studying the Bible is important, the Evangelism & Outreach Course helped provide the framework for understanding the need to create a welcoming, inviting, and safe environment .

“In my own journey with Christ, I often journal about the things the Lord is teaching me and then find myself wanting to share those lessons with others. While such topics can be interesting subject matter for bible study or small group conversations, they are usually not an entry point for beginning evangelism discussions. Herb said it succinctly: “They don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Therefore, I enthusiastically recommend the Foundations for Evangelism & Outreach course as an introduction and invitation to cultivate the skills and understanding that would enable direct, honest and heartfelt conversations with those who need God’s love the most.”
